We’re off and running! I hope everyone had a successful first week of school. As crazy as things can seem in the first day or two, our routines will settle down quickly. This week includes another community performance and our first football game. Make note of information below about required forms and fee payments required for travel to games and contests. As always, contact a director (Mr. Wright: Wind Ensemble & Jazz 2; Mr. Sawyer: Concert Band 1 & Jazz 1; Ms Scooler: Symphonic Band & Concert Band 2; Mrs. Bolton: Percussion) if you have any questions. Reminders for the week: MEET THE PANTHER ON MONDAY: Uniform for this event is the grey Paschal Band t-shirt, solid black shorts, black socks and black marching shoes. New members who do not have marching shoes may wear tennis shoes (black if possible with black socks). We are planning on rehearsing prior to this event. If temps allow, we’ll be learning more drill on the practice lot. If not, we’ll be in the auditorium running show music and stand tunes. Meet the Panther starts at 6 PM and has been moved to the Gus Bates Center. We’ll walk as a group to the gym from the auditorium or practice lot. Students will be free to leave immediately after the event ends. FORMS REQUIRED FOR TRAVEL: We’ve posted a list of students who still owe a copy of their current physical on the director office door. Students will NOT be allowed to travel without a current physical on record. Students must also make sure they have submitted a copy of the Medical Emergency Card (attached). GAME DAY SCHEDULE ON FRIDAY: Football games are a lot of fun, but take legitimate preparation on the part of the students. Our uniform for this game is the same as Meet the Panther. Tubas and percussion will put their instruments on the band’s 18-wheeler (parked on Forest Park Blvd) immediately after school. All students should have a plan for a meal between 3:45 PM and 4:45 PM. (Students are not allowed to eat concession stand food during game. Boosters will provide a light snack after halftime.) The full band will meet on the turf field at 5 PM for a march/sing-through of our halftime performance music. We will load buses on Louden St after that and head to the game. Our tentative return time for this game will be 11:30 PM. Watch for a news blast in the BAND app for notification of when we depart the stadium and an estimated return to school. Students will unload our equipment and will be dismissed as a group immediately after. No students are allowed to leave until the entire band is dismissed. REMINDER: Students need to have a specific plan to be picked up immediately after dismissal. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FRIDAY: Parent volunteers are needed at every event. Please sign up to ride a bus and/or load equipment on Friday: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0e4faaaf29a1fb6-831 3RD BAND FEE INSTALLMENT DUE ON MONDAY, AUGUST 26: The boosters and directors definitely understand that the start of school can be tough on the pocketbook. The key to fee installments is to continue to make progress. It is much better to make a small payment by each deadline than no payment. Students who have not made a payment toward their 2019-2020 band fees will not be allowed to travel to football games. Please talk to a director if you have any questions or concerns about fees. The booster club has already invested almost $50,000 in our program since August 1. Your fee payments and active participation in fundraisers is what allows such a significant level up support for our program! NEW PHONE APP FOR NEWS BLASTS AND QUICK REMINDERS (DOING AWAY WITH REMIND 101): Here’s the link to our new reminder phone app “Band” (all band students and parents are encouraged to join this group): https://band.us/n/a3a312i71a2el HONORS CREDIT (4.5 GPA) FOR BAND: Students have the choice of enrolling in band classes that are worth a maximum 4.0 or 4.5 weight to their GPA. Thanks to everyone who made it to the Debut Concert on Friday! It was officially “Standing Room Only” by the time we started. We’re proud of the progress we’ve made so far and are looking forward to moving ahead on the show. We’ll be learning drill to Act 2 (Gershwin) after school this week and we’ll learn drill to Act 3 the following week. Weather permitting, we’ll be ready to perform 3 of the 5 acts to our show at the FIRST GAME of the year. That’s really good!!
We'll be settling into a bit of a regular routine for after-school rehearsals and football games through October. Students are reminded to be proactive with their homework and communicate regularly with their teachers. We have some of the top ranking students in every grade. Don't use the marching band schedule as an excuse to fall behind on homework. Stay organized and always communicate with teachers and band veterans for support. Reminders for the week: BAND REHEARSALS NOW THAT SCHOOL HAS STARTED: The marching band will rehearse on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday each week after school (4:30 - 7 PM). We will observe this schedule throughout the season. If we have a Thursday game, we will rehearse on Friday that week. These rehearsals are co-curricular, so students are earning a grade for their attendance, preparation and participation. We have purposely left Wednesday afternoons free for students to rest, stay on top of school work and participate in other activities. Students are expected to be at rehearsal and ready to go at 4:30 PM. Students who have Dual Credit and 80-minute math last period are asked to do their best to be ready by 4:30 PM. Students who need to work with a teacher outside the school day school do so before school, during lunch or after school on the days we do not rehearse. NEW PHONE APP FOR NEWS BLASTS AND QUICK REMINDERS (DOING AWAY WITH REMIND 101): Due to the class size limits on Remind 101, we’re changing to the Band app for communication outside of weekly emails. Parents, adult guardians and students are all asked to download this app and check it regularly. I’ll send out a few reminders in Remind 101 about this decision, but no more band-related reminders will be sent through Remind 101. The app is called “Band” and the group is “Paschal Band.” There is also a “Paschal Drumline” group and we’ll be encouraging guard and jazz to create groups, as well. ALL MEMBERS (brass, woodwind, percussion and guard) should join the “Paschal Band” group. Drumline and guard members should also join their specific program’s group. 3RD BAND FEE INSTALLMENT DUE ON MONDAY, AUGUST 26: The boosters definitely understand that the start of school can be tough on the pocketbook. The key to fee installments is to continue to make progress. It is much better to make a small payment by the deadline than no payment. Students who have not made a payment toward band fees will not be allowed to travel to football games. Please talk to a director if you have any questions or concerns about fees. Thanks to all who are either paid in full and/or are making regular payments. The booster club has already invested almost $50,000 in our program since August 1. Your fee payments and active participation in fundraisers is what allows such a significant level up support for our program! HONORS CREDIT (4.5 GPA) FOR BAND: Students have the choice of enrolling in band classes that are worth a maximum 4.0 or 4.5 weight to their GPA. This is the STUDENT’S choice and obligation to confirm with their counselor. Another successful week of rehearsals is behind us. We’re continuing to make great progress and are putting together a production that the community will really enjoy and the contest judges will appreciate. Thanks to all of the parents who were able to help out at the car wash on Saturday and the DCI watch party. Our booster club does so many things to help support our program and events like the car wash help them do that. We’ve got our last week of summer band ahead of us. We’ll continue working on Act 1 of our UIL show and will begin working on Act 2 as soon as we receive that from our drill writer. Let’s finish strong this week! Information about our Debut Concert on Friday is included below. Reminders for the week: LEADERSHIP TEAM PEP BAND @ PHS ON MONDAY (7:45 - 8:15 AM): Wear your band t-shirt and arrive in time to START playing at 7:45 AM outside the new cafeteria. Check the Remind 101 Leadership Team blast or Instagram for the set list (adding Hey, Baby!). All members must have their flip folder with ALL MUSIC for this gig. Some of our performances last spring were not as strong as they should have been because students thought they have their music memorized or forgot their flip folder. MUSIC AND MARCHING REHEARSALS CONTINUE THIS WEEK (1 - 9 PM): See info below and on www.paschalband.com for days/times. We’ll only be rehearsing during the evening 5 PM - 9 PM. Attendance is required for all band members. Students should plan to be on the practice lot ready to start at 5 PM. If heat is a factor, we will start inside (watch for a Remind 101 blast). SECTION AND FULL BAND PHOTO SESSION (3 - 5 PM): Brass, WW and percussion students should arrive in their band t-shirts, black shorts and tennis shoes, but put on their marching uniform over that once they arrive. Veterans should also wear their marching shoes. New members should just wear black socks. Colorguard members will be in their dance team dresses. We’ll organize in the auditorium and then walk to the Gus Bates gym for the photos. We’ll take section photos and then get organized for the group photo in the stands. The section photos will be included in the 2019 PHS Football Program. DEBUT CONCERT ON FRIDAY (7:30 - 8:30 PM): We’re looking forward to showing off for friends and family on Friday. We’re going to start at 7:30 PM in an attempt to avoid some of the extreme heat. Weather permitting, we’ll be on the turf field for this performance. We’ll also have Kona Ice available for families during the concert and then for all band members and their families after the performance. Should be fun!! BAND REHEARSALS ONCE SCHOOL BEGINS: The marching band will rehearse on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday each week after school (4:30 - 7 PM). We will observe this schedule throughout the season. If we have a Thursday game, we will rehearse on Friday that week. These rehearsals are co-curricular, so students are earning a grade for their attendance, preparation and participation. Paschal Band families and friends,
Thanks to all of our students and staff who made the first week of our full band rehearsals a big success! We’re off to a great start and looking forward to continued progress this week. Make sure to check out the details for the car wash on Saturday. ALL MEMBERS need to sell their 5 presale tickets and turn their $$ in before the end of the day on Friday. Reminders for the week: MUSIC AND MARCHING REHEARSALS CONTINUE THIS WEEK (1 - 9 PM): See info below and on www.paschalband.com for days/times. Dress appropriately for physical activity (tennis/running shoes, shorts, t-shirt, sun screen, hat). We’ll be rehearsing music (indoors) 1 - 4 PM, take a dinner break and then practice marching (outdoors) 5:30 PM - 9 PM. Attendance is required for all band members. Contact Mr. Wright if you have any schedule conflicts. Work schedule conflicts are NOT considered excused at any point during the marching band season. P.A.S.S. WEEK AND BAND: Students should make their P.A.S.S. day a top priority. Seniors and juniors should be able to attend their sessions with no overlap of band rehearsals. Sophomores and freshmen should do all they can to get their as soon as their events start so they can make it to as much of our band rehearsals as possible. Feel free to talk to a director if you have any questions. CAR WASH ON SATURDAY (9 am - 3 pm): All band members participate in the car wash. Each section will be assigned one of the two locations (Band of America and Paschal HS). Sections will have half their members work the morning session (9 AM - Noon) and theother half will work the 2nd shift (Noon - 3 PM). PRE-SALE TICKETS FOR ALL STUDENTS: All students have been given 5 $5 pre-sale tickets. Students will sell these tickets (we have more, if needed) and turn in their $$ no later than Friday evening. If families prefer, they can submit a $25 donation instead of selling the tickets. TOWELS DONATED: We’re asking all students to donate an old/unwanted towel for the car wash. We use a LOT of towels at these events and need a significant inventory. We’ll have a donation box available in the band hall this week. DCI FINALS WATCH PARTY AT PHS ON SATURDAY (6 - 9 PM): The band officers and booster club are organizing a watch party for the Drum Corps International World Championships! Snacks will be provided. We’ll set up the video projector and our sound system and enjoy the performances in the auditorium. Plan to attend and see some of the most incredible marching ensembles around!! INSTRUMENT ACCESSORIES NEEDED FOR INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS: We have a very convenient new setup for instrument accessories this year! You are welcome to use any store or online source for music accessories you prefer, but we have a fairly convenient setup with N-Tune Music in Aledo. You can purchase whatever you need online and the items will be delivered to Paschal. Here’s the link: https://ntunemusic.com/product-category/choose-school/paschal-high-school/ All Wind & Percussion Players Need a Flip Folder: Brass, WW and percussion players MUST have a flip folder to be able to play at pep rallies and in the stands. Too often, students think they have the stand tunes memorized, but they still make errors that detract from the band’s performance. Directors will be monitoring this in the stands throughout pep rallies and games. Order your lyre and flip folder now so that you’ll have it when you need it. Clarinet, Bass Clarinet and Saxophone players: We’re encouraging you to purchase a Legere reed for the marching band season. These reeds will last the entire season and can also be used during practice times for the rest of the year! Their price is more than an individual reed, but will last the length of several boxes of reeds! Order one ASAP if you haven’t done so already. Brass players: Order valve oil, slide grease and trombone slide oil/cream now if you don’t have it. Don’t rely on your friends or the directors to provide these basic supplies. THIS WEEK’S SCHEDULE: Mon-Fri, Aug 5-9: Marching Band Rehearsals (1 - 9 PM) Saturday, August 10: Band Car Wash (9 AM - 3 PM) Saturday, August 10: DCI Watch Party in Band Hall (6 - 9 PM) UPCOMING EVENTS: Mon-Thur, Aug 12-15: Marching Band Rehearsals (5 - 9 PM) Friday, August 16: End of Camp Debut Concert (7 - 8:30 PM) Monday, August 19: First Day of School Monday, August 19: Marching Band Rehearsal 4:30 - 7 PM Tuesday, August 20: Marching Band Rehearsal 4:30 - 7 PM Thursday, August 22: Marching Band Rehearsal 4:30 - 7 PM Friday, August 30: Pep Rally (during school) Friday, August 30: PHS Football @ Irving HS (7 - 10 PM) Monday, September 2: Labor Day - No School or Rehearsal Saturday, September 14: TMEA All-Region Jazz Auditions Saturday, September 14: HEB Drumline Contest Saturday, September 21: March-a-thon (8 AM - 1 PM) Saturday, September 28: Mansfield “Preview of Champions” Contest (10 AM - 10 PM) Monday, October 7: FWISD Pre-UIL Marching Band Assessment @ FWISD Clark Stadium (2 - 7 PM) Friday, October 11: Drumline performance at “Day of the Girl” Parade Monday, October 14: Marching Band Rehearsal (3 - 6 PM) Tuesday, October 15: UIL Marching Band Contest @ Mansfield (3 - 8 PM) Friday, October 18: Wind Ensemble/Leadership Pep Band @ Lily B Walk-a-thon Saturday, October 26: US Bands Marching Contest @ Coppell HS (10 AM - 10 PM) |
